Driftwood Art: The Heart of Hoi An’s Upcycled Art Scene

One of the most unique experiences in Hoi An’s art world is discovering the beauty of driftwood sculpture—a craft rooted in tradition, sustainability, and storytelling.

At Cui Lu Art Space, many of the most powerful pieces are created from reclaimed driftwood gathered along the Thu Bon River. These natural materials travel down from the highlands of Quang Nam, carried by the waterways surrounding Hoi An, and are transformed by local artisans into breathtaking works of art.

  • Over 100 original driftwood sculptures

  • Artisan demonstrations and hand-carving in action

  • A tranquil riverside café with garden views

A Creative Journey Born in Hoi An

Both Cui Lu Art Space and Lang Cui Lu – Driftwood Village were founded by Le Ngoc Thuan, a local entrepreneur and artist whose passion for wood carving was born during the pandemic.

A local to Hoi An and An Bang Beach, Thuan spent time during the pandemic learning the traditional techniques from the Co Tu people in the mountains. He then built, Lang Cui Lu, a space to preserve and pass on the craft—and to showcase the depth of Vietnamese artistic talent. And in 2025, launched Cui Lu Art Space & Coco Casa Art Gallery to showcase the amazing talents of other local Vietnamese painters, sculptors and artists of all kinds.
